![]() He goes into town once a week, briefly, to run essential errands. He’s stopped going to church and keeps to himself amidst his mountains of books (“spines and spines and spines, raised to towers on the coffee table, queued into rows along the skirting boards”). ![]() The late-middle-aged Ray whom readers encounter in these pages has had lots of practice feeling like a pariah, and decades of social exile have taken their toll. Because his father thought Ray “wasn’t a right-minded little boy … wasn’t all there,” he never sent his son to school. He spent his days working in a factory Ray never saw and, by keeping mostly quiet on the matter, led Ray to believe that his mother’s death was linked to his birth-in other words, that he was guilty of doing inadvertent harm to others from the get-go. The father, readers discern, was a rather absent presence (or worse) during his life as well. Ray wears his father’s ill-fitting slippers around the house he hangs two towels in the bathroom. But he remains very much a presence in the otherwise solitary life of his son. Ray, the narrator, is a 57-year-old man who lives alone in a coastal Irish village in what he still thinks of as “my father’s house.” His father is dead, a sausage segment having “stoppered his windpipe” at breakfast one morning several years earlier. ![]() Baume ( who is also a graphic artist) proceeds like a collagist, but here are the basics. ![]()

![]() ![]() Thi writes of moving with her husband from New York to California to raise her son with her husband Travis, in order to be closer to her parents. The graphic form, meanwhile, rewards and bolsters Thi’s often quite appropriately austere prose. Early on, for instance, two of her siblings are drawn as shadows in a panel that introduces the family, naturally leading the reader to wonder what happened to them. Thi’s spare, evocative prose and drawings together become greater than the sum of their parts. “But I fear that around them, I will always be a child… and they a symbol to me-two sides of a chasm, full of meaning and resentment.” ![]() “I am now older than my parents were when they made that incredible journey,” she writes. I also love how she adapted and at times took advantage of her situation. I could definitely feel all that through Gabriella. I’ve always love being in the mind of an amnesiac – for their fear, confusion and frustration. I didn’t want him to see the things he caused deep in my soul. I expected it to be dark, but turned out it wasn’t quite that – only on the surface, but I still enjoyed it anyway. ![]() What first caught my attention about this book/series was the twin story. There is, of course, with its fine west front, the magnificent cathedral, where Catherine of Aragon is buried and St Oswald’s uncorrupted arm was once kept. It does, of course, depend on the novel, and there are notable exceptions, such as Mark Haddon’s A Spot of Bother, or Marina Lewycka’s A Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian, the latter capturing in a hilariously funny and yet deeply sad way the life of some of the local immigrant communities that are a part of the life of this city. TO BE honest, Peterborough (where I live) is not an obvious place to set a novel. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Join the fanpack who are waiting for Pack Darling, Part Two and see if you agree with these readers’ reviews! “Like AJ Merlin's Reckless, Pack Darling fits into that great middle ground … Basically, it's a perfect choice for those who don't want super sweet or super dark. ♥ Burn: Slow ♥ Heat: Med/High (spicy MM + MMMMM scenes) ♥ Alert: Growly alpha males, no shifting ♥ Warning : Contains MM content, frequent cursing, and references to past assault that may be disturbing.
